Scotland Policy Sprint

The AHRC Creative Communities programme Scotland Policy Sprint was sponsored by Foysol Choudhury MSP and hosted at the Scottish Parliament in January 2025.

Policy Lead Helen Apsey shared policy proposals and recommendations on health and wellbeing with a diverse range of stakeholders including Scottish Government, policy makers, local NHS trusts, universities, funders, and third and private sector organisations.

The AHRC Creative Communities programme is grateful for the ongoing support of Foysol Choudhury MSP, Labour MSP, Spokesperson for Culture, Europe and International Development and Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Lothian region since May 2021.

The Sprint event shared findings from the AHRC Creative Communities Scotland Policy Lab, which used co-creation methods and creative facilitation to encourage cross-sector discussion, harness opportunities and tackle challenges using culture as a lever to unlock the potential of devolution in health and wellbeing policy.

Themed around healthcare standards, social care, mental health improvement, and long-term wellbeing conditions, the Sprint considered specific Scottish policy contexts. These included the desire to build cross-nation perspectives, greater opportunities through devolution, creating structures to harness good at local and regional levels, funding pressures on Scottish Government, and the opportunity to look to collaborative working with Northern England and Northern Ireland.

The policy recommendations from the upcoming paper will enable arts and culture to create a stronger, fairer economy and society through delivering cross-sector into healthcare targets.
