Prof Katy Shaw, Director of the AHRC Creative Communities programme, opened the first Tyne Design Week – a new celebration of creativity, innovation and design in the North East.
Katy presented findings from the AHRC Creative Communities programme around place, co-creation and the role of culture in delivering devolution, breaking down barriers to community opportunity, enhancing belonging and addressing regional inequality.
This week long event is delivered by Edge Innovation, in partnership with the North East Combined Authority, Northumbria University and Newcastle University.
Tyne Design week has showcased exciting graduate work from Northumbria University and celebrated innovation and creativity across the North East – you can read more about the graduate showcases and workshops online.
Speakers and participants shared insights on the role of culture and design in driving innovation and strengthening communities, often in inspirational and unexpected ways. With a strong focus on place, the festival explored how culture and the creative industries are shaping the region’s economic, social, and environmental futures.
