UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) spoke to CIP researcher Dr Jim Donaghey about his Creative Communities research.
Dr Jim Donaghey, Community Innovation Practitioner (CIP) 2024-24 worked on ‘Get Portrush a Skatepark! Nurturing Skateboard Culture on Northern Ireland’s North Coast’, in collaboration with third-sector partner CAUS (the Causeway Association of Urban Sports) and the wider Portrush skateboarding community to develop understanding of the value of skaters as a Creative Community.
Jim co-created methods of community engagement to explore gentrification, resortification and sport in coastal communities. Using new and archival footage from local skater and videographer Slaine Browne, Jim worked to celebrate the DIY creative practices of the Portrush skateboarding community.
As part of the 2023-24 CIP cohort, Jim produced a community-oriented case study report, a devolved policy paper and a podcast episode that explored how groundbreaking cultural research, creativity and inclusive innovation can empower us to build stronger, more resilient communities across the devolved nations and regions of the UK.
