‘This talk is not for you’ – Prof Katy Shaw delivers TED Talk

Direct of Creative Communities Prof Katy Shaw presents ‘Breaking a Class Ceiling: The Value of Diversity in Creative Industries’ for the TEDxSoho audience.

Prof Katy Shaw has presented an intense and vital intervention on the obstacles to and solutions for diversity in the UK creative industry through the 2022 TEDxSoho TEDTalk series. This year, TEDxSoho have been celebrating people and organisations who are determined to find innovative and daring paths to ‘make “better” a reality’.

Comments on the video via YouTube describe the talk as ‘inspiring to watch’ and emphasise the value of Katy’s use of this platform, saying that it is ‘very reassuring to hear that people are organising to address the widening gap between those who have and those who have nowt’.

Katy’s talk was part of a year long series titled ‘This is not a Rehearsal’ organised by Sam Orams and featuring talks from Tom Odell, Paul Scanlan, Michael Sheen and Aindrea Emelife among others. TEDx was created in the spirit of the broader TED mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. It supports independent organisers who want to create a TED-like event in their own community.

Speaking about the experience, Katy told us that ‘giving a Ted Talk was the most brilliant experience: such an impactful way to communicate new research!’
